Our decision to adopt...

After many years of trying to conceive a child and the heartbreak that followed, we ultimately decided that the most important thing for us was to become parents. We wanted to be a mom and a dad and adoption could give us that opportunity. We explored domestic and international adoption but after months of research we decided that international adoption was the best decision for us. We immediately fell in love with the children of China and Kazakhstan, but in the end chose Kazakhstan because the baby houses (orphanages) have a wonderful reputation, the developmental health of the children seems to be well above many other countries and the children are well provided for and loved by their caregivers. Infants are not made available for international adoption until they are 6 months old, so we are hoping for a baby boy between 6-12 months old.

Once we have accepted the referral and have traveled to Kazakhstan, we will stay for 4-6 weeks depending on the region. The first 2 weeks are designated to getting to know our baby in the baby house through daily visits (bonding period), we will then go to court. After court we will either stay in country for another 3-4 weeks or come home for 2-3 weeks and then travel for another week to take custody of our baby. We hope to travel by summer 2006.
